This underdevelopment causes the tissues around the vocal cords to collapse during breathing, resulting in a respiratory distress called stridor.<\/p>\n<p><b>Symptoms of laryngomalacia:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Stridor:<\/b>\u00a0A high-pitched, squeaking sound during breathing<\/li>\n<li><b>Noisy breathing:<\/b>\u00a0Wheezing or whistling sounds during breathing<\/li>\n<li><b>Retractions:<\/b>\u00a0Inward pulling of the chest muscles during breathing<\/li>\n<li><b>Cyanosis:<\/b>\u00a0Bluish tint to the skin<\/li>\n<li><b>Feeding difficulties:<\/b>\u00a0Choking or coughing while feeding<\/li>\n<li><b>Failure to thrive:<\/b>\u00a0Poor weight gain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Diagnosis of laryngomalacia:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Laryngomalacia is diagnosed in a clinic setting. A flexible endoscope is inserted through the nose to visualize the baby\u2019s larynx and determine if laryngomalacia is present.<\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment of laryngomalacia:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Laryngomalacia is a condition that often resolves on its own as the baby grows. Therefore, babies with mild laryngomalacia can be monitored without treatment. However, medication or surgery may be necessary for babies with moderate to severe respiratory distress.<\/p>\n<p><b>Medication:<\/b>\u00a0Medications such as bronchodilators and steroids can be used to reduce inflammation and improve breathing.<\/p>\n<p><b>Surgery:<\/b>\u00a0Supraglottoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue from the larynx to improve breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Laryngomalacia is a congenital airway disease. Both the follow-up and treatment processes are challenging for both families and physicians.
